Is your baby safe in your home

Babies are highly inquisitive naturally and they try to touch, taste things and finally want to discover something. Not realizing whether, whatever they are trying to explore is dangerous or not, they try to investigate things. Such a probing nature of babies, make them vulnerable to accidents ending with severe injuries. Consequently parents must take care of safety of the baby, remove possible hazards in their home and ensure that baby will not harm itself. Here I will try to compile the useful tips to ensure baby safety based on whatever I have seen in my crèche and heard from parents.

The common problem in crèche, which is unlikely to happen in home, is that one baby trying to explore other baby’s eyes. Blinking nature of eyes of each baby, makes it curious for other babies, that they finally try to probe the eyes with their fingers. Whenever you are in function where there are number of babies, make sure that your baby’s eyes are not hurt by other babies.

In home the common threat to baby safety comes with sharp objects which are lying on the floor. Babies get severely wounded when trying to play with sharp objects like knife, scissors. Make sure that harmful objects are far away from the reach of babies. Medicines, poisonous material must be kept high above so that babies never reach them. When you are cleaning your items in the trash make sure, your baby is not nearby. Spills of cleaning fluid might harm baby’s eyes. Small items which are not edible, but might look like eatables are dangerous to babies as babies might try to eat them. Remove such items from babies. Good examples are coins, small magnets etc.

Gas burners must be childproofed and all electrical connections must be covered to prevent baby from assessing the connections. While cooking, make sure that you baby is not nearby as hot items are dangerous to babies. In bathrooms all slippery items like soaps; shampoo must be removed from baby’s path. Never leave your baby inside the bath tub for attending phone calls or door bells. Your balcony must be properly protected if the baby is able to squeeze through the balcony openings. If you have plants in your home make sure that they are not thorny otherwise they might badly harm your baby.

Finally even if your home is perfectly baby proofed never leave your baby alone or unattended, the magic word is “There is no alternate for a guardian of your baby”.

Toy Selection

Your baby is in heaven if it is in midst of toys. The wealth of baby is its toys and dolls. Toys play a crucial role in making your baby and hence yourself happy. However if the toys are improperly selected they might injure you baby and significantly cause physical harm to your baby. Hence careful attention must be paid in selecting the toys to your baby. Here are the following useful hints about toy selection.

Once one of the parents who used to drop his baby in my crèche asked me what is the suitable toy for my baby. I simply replied, what is your baby’s interest? If your baby pays keen attention to music then musical toys are best suited for your baby, if your baby in interested in moving objects then moving and rolling toys can make your baby happy. Likewise one has to select the toys based on the baby’s interest. Babies, who are attracted towards glittering light, get delighted with toys which emit light.

Each and every passing day babies try to discover something. Apart from happiness if you select your toys so that the babies learn something from the toys, they will be clearly attracted towards the toys. Don’t try to buy same type of monotonous toys again and again which is not creative for the baby.

I have heard from number of parents who regularly leave their children in my crèche, about the sad stories which toys usually create. Once a baby swallowed an iron piece from a doll which left unnoticed caused septic in the inner part of the mouth. So care must be taken in selecting toys. Whenever selecting a toy the first information which the parents must look through is, the age group of baby/child to which the toy is suitable. This information will be written on the toy. Also ensure that the toy doesn’t contain sharp edges and unwanted chemical coatings which might be allergic to your baby.

Select your toys such that it is big enough and will not fit into babies mouth. For the same reason magnetic toys are not preferred. Magnets tend to fall and are small enough that babies might swallow it. Toys must be of less weight, as I have seen in my crèche babies harm themselves by dropping heavy toys on their legs. Make sure that the toy is new enough. Old toys seem to have developed rust in them which baby skin will not be ready to accept. Select proper and appropriate toys for your baby enjoy seeing your baby enjoying the toys.

Tips to stop misbehavior of children and make them listen to you.

This is the first blog post which I am writing after starting the blog. Having taken care of children and babies for the past decade I will like to share the steps which I use to tackle the playful and naughty child. First need for a parent to deal with playful child is lot of patience and politeness. Children want the parents do to what they want, while parents will be interested in teaching the children about respectful behavior. Here are the steps.

Try to sow a feeling in the children whether he/she is a good boy/girl or not. When ever they misbehave you can make them realize that such a such activity doesn’t belong to a good boy/girl. Believe me or not the question “whether you are good boy/girl or not” asked to children in a patient manner has lot of impact in their behavior. First it enters in their mind such a such activity is a bad activity and second thing I must not do such a bad activity. This I have observed in number of children in my crèche.

While communicating with you children be polite and don’t order them. Instead of saying “You must sit quietly now” you can say them “Please why can’t you sit quietly now”. Patience is a key in controlling the misbehavior of children.

I have observed some children although initially do not obey what we say, continuous polite instructions puts a habit in them such that they regularly get practiced to do things.

Another tactics which clearly works in dealing children is, create a feeling in them, that you are there to help them. Words like “I am here for you only know” creates a sense of responsibility in children that ultimately, they finally turn towards you and listen to you, whenever they are in difficulty, however trivial the difficulty may be.

Give full attention to the children when they are speaking. Words like “Mmm” , “Yes” etc makes a children feel their words are getting recognized, while no response from the elders gets them thinking they are left out. Such a feeling in children will keep them far away from you.

Finally don’t show your office pressure or family pressure on your children. A quarrel with your spouse or your boss in office and showing harsh words and face to your children is going to negatively motivate them. Whatever be the case, politeness, calm face and positive approach are the key in making your children listen to you.

I have started a new group at Google groups for parents about how to make your baby happy and comfortable. Here you can interact with other parents about the nature of your baby and discuss about common family matters. You can join the group for free. Join the group

Here is a detailed guide which will teach you how to make your children listen to you and be respectful. Click here. Happy parenting.
